Fishbowl also known as Fishbowl Media is a mobile social networking app based in San Francisco, California. The application connects professionals and allows them to have semi-anonymous workplace conversations.[1][2][3]

Fishbowl is used by news publishers to help source anonymous discussions that reveal candid opinions of professionals working across companies and industries as well as by employees of companies for discussions about topics like salary and culture.[4][5][6]

Founding

Fishbowl was launched in 2016 by Matt Sunbulli and Loren Appin who joined as a co-founder.[7][8]

As revealed in a 2019 edition of the Harvard Business Review, Sunbulli had the inspiration for Fishbowl after observing mobile social networks like Nextdoor enabling neighbors to communicate by employing geofencing and geolocation. Sunbulli realized that professionals could communicate with other professionals who were located within similar companies and industries. In addition, he noticed that identity on professional networks like LinkedIn prevented users from being authentic while engaging in conversations.[9]

History

In June 2017, Fishbowl made it possible for advertising agency employees to register for the app through their business email.[7] In the same year, several employees of notable organizations registered for the applications including, 28 percent of Saatchi & Saatchi employees, 20 percent of Crispin Porter + Bogusky, 16 percent of Grey, and 17 percent of SapientRazorfish.[10]

In July 2019, Fishbowl allowed thousands of waitlisted marketing employees to register to the app from companies such as Nike, Google, Apple, PepsiCo, and Facebook.[7]

Financing

Fishbowl raised $2.1 million in a seed funding round held in 2017. The round was led by Binary Capital and Outlander Fund.[11][12][13] In 2019, the company raised additional seed funding of $5.3 million in a round led by Alex Zhu, founder of Musical.ly, Hans Tung, a managing partner of GGV Capital, and Lerer Hippeau.[13][14]

Acquisition

In September 2021, Fishbowl was acquired by the multinational firm Recruit Holdings, which also owns Indeed and Glassdoor.[15][7][16]
