First/Last race
The First/Last race fields should contain the first/last races for which the driver was *entered*, even if they didn't actually start the race.
Teams field
The "Teams" field should be populated with a list of the chassis makes the driver drove, rather than a list of teams for which they drove. So, Alain Prost's infobox contains "Teams: McLaren, Renault, Ferrari, Williams", rather than "Teams: Marlboro Team McLaren, Equipe Renault Elf, Marlboro McLaren International, Honda Marlboro McLaren, Scuderia Ferrari, Canon Williams Renault". The main rationale for this is to keep the information in the infobox concise, noting that the team names are listed in the driver's F1 results table.
BF1 fields
The "BF1" fields contain details of the driver's participation in the British Formula One Championship.
Updates
Following the final race of the season, the "YYYY Team" field for the following season is added but the existing field for the just-completed season is retained until the end of the calendar year.
On 1 January, the "YYYY Team" field for the previous season is replaced with a hidden placeholder for the season following the new season (e.g. on 1 January 2018, the 2017 field was replaced with a placeholder for 2019). The placeholder is employed to avoid editors "helpfully" renumbering the fields to close up the gaps, only for the fields to have to be renumbered again at the end of the season.
Use as a child template
This infobox may be used to create a genre-specific section within {{Infobox person}} (or similar biographical infobox templates) for cases where a person may be notable in more than one field; a generic example is shown below. For guidance on usage, see Wikipedia:Infobox modules. Also see the Template:Infobox documentation which explains embedding and subboxes.
{{Infobox person | name = | image = | caption = | birth_date = | birth_place = | <!-- etc. --> | module = {{Infobox F1 driver | child=yes <!-- or embed=yes or subbox=yes --> | Years = | Team(s) = | Races = | Championships = | <!-- etc. --> }} }}
The template may also be used as a subsection of {{Infobox racing driver}} as follows:
{{Infobox racing driver | image = | caption = | nationality = | birth_name = | birth_date = | birth_place = | titles = | title years = | record template1 = {{Infobox F1 driver|child=yes | Years = | Team(s) = | Races = | Championships = }} }}
Microformat
The HTML markup produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the person's details parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue articles across Wikipedia or via a browser tool operated by a reader, to (for example) add the subject to an address book or database. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.
Sub-templates
Date-of-birth ("bday") information will only be included in the microformat if {{birth date}}, or {{birth date and age}} are used in the infobox. (Do not use these if the date is before 1583). Be cautious about using these if the person is still living, per WP:DOB.
To include a URL, use {{URL}}.
Please do not remove instances of these sub-templates.
