This subtemplate is used by {{infobox college football season}} to simplify the generation of links to the previous and next seasons. The current article naming scheme is as follows:

• From 1869 to 1955 → YEAR college football season
• From 1956 to 1972 → YEAR NCAA University Division football season
• From 1973 to 1977 → YEAR NCAA Division I football season
• From 1978 to 2005 → YEAR NCAA Division I-A football season
• After 2005 → YEAR NCAA Division I FBS football season

If a value for type is passed, then type is returned rather than the default value, regardless of the year.
