Parameters

Please note:

  • With parameters or values that are not applicable/available or unknown, please use "none" or "unknown" rather than the ambiguous abbreviations "n/a", etc.
  • At least one reliable source citation must accompany each qualitative or subjective judgement, quantity or statistical entry (see WP:MILMOS#CITE).

Parameters whose inclusion is required are listed below in bold italics.

Parameter Description
name Formal name of the memorial.
native_name The name in local language of the area where the memorial is located. If more than one, separate using {{plainlist}}.
native_name_lang The local language's ISO 639-2 code (e.g. "fr" for French). If more than one, use {{lang}} instead.
body The country or other body responsible for administering the memorial (e.g. the Commonwealth War Graves Commission).
image An image of the memorial, supplied in the form image=filename.
image_size The size of the image. The size 236px is the maximum that usually fits within a standard {{Infobox}} without resizing it.
alt Alt text for image, for visually impaired readers. One word (such as "photograph") is rarely sufficient. See WP:ALT.
caption An optional caption for the image
commemorates The force, nationality, or other identity of the dead being honored (e.g. "the British of all wars", "the missing of World War I", "the RAF dead of World War II", etc.).
use_dates Period during which the people interred at the cemetery died, given as an en dash-separated pair of numbers (e.g. "1915–18").
This often corresponds to the dates of a particular conflict. Do not use if commemorates above is specified.
established Date when the memorial was established or first used (use {{start date}}).
unveiled Date when the memorial was unveiled (if established provided, do not use {{start date}}).
removed Date when the memorial was removed or dismantled (use {{end date}}).
coordinates Location of the memorial. For coordinates, use {{coord}} with display=inline, title. Please do not be overly precise.
location Where the location is given as a coordinate pair, the town or place within which the memorial is located.
nearest_town Where the location is given as a coordinate pair and the memorial is not located within a town, the town nearest to the memorial.
designer Person, people or group that designed the memorial.
total_burials Total number of people buried in the memorial's cemetery.
unknowns Number of unidentified individuals buried in the memorial's cemetery.
commemorated Number of individuals without known graves commemorated in the memorial's cemetery.
by_country Breakdown of burials by nation (or, where appropriate, by a region of similar type or size). Usually formatted as a bulleted list.
by_war Breakdown of burials by the war during which those buried were killed. Usually formatted as a bulleted list.
inscription The main inscription on the memorial (if any).
embedded For embedding an embeddable infobox (or sidebar) template such as {{Infobox designation list}} or {{Infobox NRHP}}.
source At least one source for the statistics in the infobox.

Microformat

The HTML markup produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the place-name and location parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue articles across Wikipedia, or via a browser tool operated by a person, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. Within the hCard is a Geo microformat, which additionally makes the coordinates (latitude & longitude) parsable, so that they can be, say, looked up on a map, or downloaded to a GPS unit. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.

Sub-templates

If the place or venue has "established", "founded", "opened" or similar dates, use {{start date}} for the earliest of those dates unless the date is before 1583 CE.

If it has a URL, use {{URL}}.

Please do not remove instances of these sub-templates.

Classes

hCard uses HTML classes including:

  • adr
  • agent
  • category
  • county-name
  • extended-address
  • fn
  • label
  • locality
  • nickname
  • note
  • org
  • region
  • street-address
  • uid
  • url
  • vcard

Geo is produced by calling {{coord}}, and uses HTML classes:

  • geo
  • latitude
  • longitude

Please do not rename or remove these classes nor collapse nested elements which use them.

Precision

When giving coordinates, please use an appropriate level of precision. Do not use {{coord}}'s |name= parameter.
