Darlene Ann Lancer is an American psychotherapist specializing in marriage and family therapy, author and former entertainment lawyer As an author she is known for her written works on codependency, narcissism, and self-esteem.

Early life and education

Lancer was born in Los Angeles, California. In 1968, she graduated from Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Los Angeles with a Bachelor's degree.[1][2] After graduating, she continued at UCLA School of Law, obtaining her Juris Doctor and an American Jurisprudence award in 1970.[3] In 1989, she graduated from Antioch University with a Masters in Clinical Psychology. Lancer is a certified life coach and hypnotist. She obtained her Hypnotherapy certification from the American Institute of Hypnotherapy in 2004 and her NLP certification from the American University of NLP in 2012.[4][5]

Career

Lancer started her career as a lawyer. In 1986, she changed career paths and started working as a psychotherapist at the Southern California Counseling Center providing individual and family therapy. She also worked as a Senior Mediator in child custody and domestic violence cases at the Los Angeles County Conciliation Court. In 1991, she opened her private practice where she provided individual and couples counseling.[6][7]

She has written on topics of codependency, narcissism, shame, self-esteem and, dating and relationship issues.[8][9][10] In 2012, her book Codependency for Dummies was published.[11][12][13] The second edition to this book was published in 2015.[14] Other books written by her include Conquering Shame and Codependency: 8 Steps to Freeing the True You and Dating, Loving, and Leaving a Narcissist, which was published in 2015 and 2022, respectively.[15] Other written works by Lancer include seven e-books and her contributions to online publications such as Psychology Today and Psych Central.[16][17][18][19][20][21]

Lancer has been interviewed on podcasts, radio and network TV, including Fox, NBC, ABC, and CBS. She has presented at workshops and seminars for universities, counseling centers, and organizations, including the National Association of Addiction Treatment Professionals, West Coast Symposium of Addiction Disorders, Sovereign Health, Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Antioch University, Brotman Hospital, , California State Bar Association, Pepperdine College and University of San Diego.[22][23][24][25]

Lancer maintains a private psychotherapy practice in Santa Monica, California and coaches internationally.[5]
